Name it: this is a panic attack, not danger

Still water at sunrise

One of the cruel tricks of panic is the story that rides on top of the body: “This time is different. Something is really wrong.”

The body is loud. The story makes it louder. A sentence that helps many people is almost boring on purpose:

“This is a panic attack. It is a false alarm. It will peak. It will pass.”

You are not pretending you feel fine. You are giving the experience a name so it does not get to call itself a heart attack, a breakdown, or the end.

How to use it

You have already survived every wave that has come. This one gets to be another wave — not a verdict on you.

If chest pain, fainting, or breathing trouble is new for you, get medical care to rule out other causes. After that, naming panic is still allowed.
