4-7-8 breathing when a panic attack already started

If your chest is tight and your thoughts are sprinting, that does not mean you are in danger. It means your nervous system hit the alarm a little too hard.
A panic attack is a false alarm — intense, real in the body, and still not proof that something is medically wrong in this moment.
Today’s tool is 4-7-8 breathing. It gives your body a slower rhythm to follow when everything feels too fast.
How to do it
- Breathe in quietly through your nose for 4
- Hold for 7
- Exhale slowly through your mouth for 8
Do that 4 times. If holding for 7 feels like too much, shorten it. The goal is a longer, softer exhale — not a perfect count.
You do not have to “calm down on command.” You only have to stay with yourself until the wave peaks and starts to fall. It will fall.
