What to do during a panic attack: widen your gaze

Help My Attacks · Today’s tool

Calm reminder to soften your eyes and widen your gaze during a panic attack

When panic hits, vision often narrows. The room can feel like a tunnel. That isn’t you failing to stay present — it’s your nervous system locking onto threat and dropping the edges of the picture.

You don’t have to force your eyes to relax. You can gently invite more of the room back in. Softening your gaze and noticing what’s at the edges gives your brain a quieter signal: more space, less tunnel. It won’t cancel the wave. It just widens one place the alarm has squeezed.

How to try it

If looking around feels like too much, pick one still object at the edge and keep it in soft awareness while you breathe. Wide is the point, not a perfect scan. You are still here.
