What to do during a panic attack: open your hands

When panic hits, a lot of bodies brace without asking you. Fists curl. Jaw locks. Shoulders climb. That bracing is your nervous system trying to prepare for danger that isn’t actually here.
You don’t have to force yourself calm. You can give your body one less job. Opening your hands is a small, concrete signal: we are not fighting right now. It won’t erase the wave. It just softens one place the alarm is gripping, and that can make the peak a little easier to ride.
How to try it
- Notice if your hands are clenched, tucked, or pressed hard into something.
- Slowly uncurl your fingers. Let the palms open, facing up or resting soft on your lap.
- Feel the air on your palms, or the fabric under them, for a few breaths.
- If your hands want to close again, that’s okay — open them once more, gently.
If open palms feel too exposed, rest your hands flat and soft instead. Soft is the point, not a perfect pose. You are still here.
