What to do during a panic attack: drop your shoulders

When alarm hits, a lot of us brace without noticing — shoulders up by the ears, neck tight, like we’re waiting for impact. That bracing is your nervous system trying to protect you. It isn’t the same as safety.
Gently dropping your shoulders (then dropping them again a few seconds later, because bracing often creeps back) gives your body a quieter signal. Not to force calm — just to stop holding a fight that isn’t here.
Try drop your shoulders
- Notice where your shoulders are right now.
- Soften them down and back, just a little.
- A few seconds later, soften them again.
- No need to feel calm yet. One softer set of shoulders is enough of a start.
This peak can pass. You are still here in a body that can unbrace a little.
