What to do during a panic attack: name three sounds

When panic spikes, hearing often goes fuzzy — or you stop noticing the room at all. The alarm story gets loud. Everyday sounds fade into the background.
Naming three sounds you can hear (a fan, traffic, the fridge, birds, your own breath) gives your nervous system ordinary facts instead of the catastrophe narrative. Not to force calm — just to land one small sense at a time.
Try name three sounds
- Pause. Soften your shoulders if you can.
- Listen for one sound. Name it out loud or in your head.
- Find a second. Then a third.
- No need to feel calm yet. Three sounds is enough of a start.
This peak can pass. You are still here in the room with the ordinary noises.
