What to do during a panic attack: longer out-breath

Help My Attacks · Today’s tool

Calm reminder to exhale longer during a panic attack

When panic hits, breath often goes shallow and fast. That can feed the alarm — tight chest, racing thoughts, the sense that you cannot get enough air.

A longer out-breath than in-breath is a simple nervous-system cue. You are not forcing calm. You are giving your body one clear signal that you might be safer than the alarm says.

Try a longer out-breath

You do not have to feel calm yet. One longer out-breath is enough of a start. This peak can pass.
